This was my 2026 contribution to a project called "Friendship is...", a collaboration between 120 authors and French illustrator, Jack Koch, to create books to support children in hospitals in France. Each author was asked to write a sentence or short piece starting with, "Friendship is..." The book is the fifth in the series and releases in October.
Friendship is...
Friendship is…
a unicorn,
magical and fantastical though very very real.
laughter,
invisible but bright and sparkly as fireflies.
time,
finite and precious and eternal.
a fart,
sometimes loud and embarrassing, other times quiet and hidden, and shows up at the darndest times.
an umbrella,
refuge in a storm and a twirling wonder of genius.
IKEA furniture,
difficult to build, durable once you do.
a four-leaf clover,
hard to find and lucky to have.
a sturdy boat,
unsinkable and able to carry you on grand adventures.
a gift.
